Course description

The Coller-Menmon Animal Protection Law Course

Animal protection law is rapidly developing in the last decades, challenging legal notions such as property, legal personhood and family.

The course will give a general picture of the socio-economic reality and of the ideological context on the basis of which animal protection law develops. It will provide basic knowledge of the philosophical and political theories of animal liberation. It will allow a glance into the conceptual discussions regarding the legal status of animals. It will give an introduction to basic concepts of animal welfare science. We will study the characteristics of different kinds of regulatory tools for the protection of animal in Israel and abroad, and the specific regulatory regime in Israel. Finally, we will ask what the role of the lawyer is in the animal protection movement, and which practical and in-principal dilemmas she might face when asked to represent the interests of animals.
