Course description

Although today Greek and Roman monuments seem to us snow-fresh, they were, in fact, very colorful. The purpose of the course is to introduce the color theories prevalent in the classical world, the painting materials and the techniques of applying color to works of art from a variety of mediums [marble, metals, terracotta, wall and panel paintings, ivory and textile]. The main questions we will discuss in the lessons are what was the role of color in the ancient work of art, what was its meaning, was the color mimetic or symbolic? We will also discuss the way viewers responded to those colorful artifacts.
