Course description

Children's Literature functions, between other things, as a means to convey beliefs, ideologies, concepts and cultural norms to the future generation. There are works which deal seriously with social aspects and problems, beside didactic literature.

In this course we will deal with Social Justice in Children's and Young Adults' Literature. The meetings will focus on the way the society's norms and the culture and world views of a certain society and era are exposed in Israel and other cultures, in the past and today. This will include Gender discussions, and discussions about immigrants, old people, people having special needs, and also poverty, social responsibility, capitalism and socialism, and other aspects of Social Justice.

The course will include also a discussion about the esthetic value of the literary text: the language, the characters, the plot, the point of view and other artistic aspects.
