Child rearing is epitomized as a main task of individuals and societies. Yet, the economic aspect of this endeavor receives little attention. This course aims at introducing the direct and indirect costs of raising children. It examines how these costs both construct and are constructed by social and political contexts. We will learn theoretical approaches and empirical findings concerning the various aspects of reproduction and child rearing at the national and international levels, as well as at the family and individual levels.
