Course description

The European twentieth century was wild and tumultuous. This class presents it through processes of conflict and negotiation between individuals, groups and organizations in the continent along "the short century," which lasted from the revolutions in Russia in 1917 until the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Eastern Bloc in 1989-90. The class offers several major lenses through which to examine the history of the previous century in Europe. I teach the course materials primarily from the perspective of political and social history and emphasize the actions of humans, as individuals and in groups and organizations, which was behind such titles as "modernization," "democratization," "ideology," "state-building," or "human rights". In class, we will discuss all these, among others, through conflict and violence they bred and ask what societies they gave rise to in Europe and what they left behind for the current century.
