This seminar proposes a critical reading of fundamental texts in gay and lesbian studies and queer theory from a double perspective – feminist and queer. While examining the relationships and differences between feminism and queer theory, we will analyze the ways in which the conceptualization of the categories of gender and sexuality in these discourses were affected by their separation. By focusing on American texts from the 70's through the 90's, we will centralize the gap between the attempts of these discourses to “liberate” women/LGBTs/queers and their renewed gender and sexual decrees, which at times led to the erasure of life experience and its replacement with theoretical, politically correct models.

The central questions we will address include: Does egalitarian sexuality exist? Can we talk about sexuality which is not shaped by gender? Are there non-oppressive genders? Can we separate sexual oppression from gender oppression?  Can queer thought replace feminism?

Background in feminist theory or gender studies is required. This course is not open for students who took the course “Feministically Queer”.

Seminar requirements: attendance, completing course readings on time, active participation, intermediate assignment (10%) and seminar/paper (90%).
