Course description

What is happiness and how does aspiration for happiness operates as a disciplinary mechanisms? Why is sentimentality perceived as a feminine trait? What is emotional capital and how can one acquire one? In what ways is anger gendered and racialized? Who is allowed to cry and under which circumstances? What are we ashamed of and what are we proud of? How do we imagine emotions and evaluate different emotional performances? Which feelings are considered as admirable and in which social contexts? What are gendered emotional rules and emotional work? This seminar will deal with these and many other questions, based on wide range of research literature exploring the gendered sociology of emotions. The purpose of the seminar is to present a comprehensive review of theories, concepts, and analyse some of the central themes in feminist and queer thought.

During the seminar we will use the analytical tools of gender studies to critically explore different emotional experiences and displays and carefully explore it’s political attributes and implications. As such, one of the basic assumptions of the seminar is that emotions are embedded in different ideologies and sets of discourses.  During the first part of the seminar we will explore theories of gender and emotion and in the second part study specific emotions such as shame, happiness and loneliness. Our discussions will be based on an in-depth reading of the writings of researchers such as Sarah Ahmed, Arllie Hochschild, Katherine Lutz, Katherine Woodward and many others.
