Course description

The prominent Mexican prose writer Carlos Fuentes said: "EL SUR DEL SUR ES AMERICA LATINA", that is, Latin America is the South's South. He was, in fact, trying to point out the influence of the world of prose writers from the USA south on the writers of the Latin American "Boom" of the 1960s.

We will read and interpret in this seminar short stories and novels of USA writers of the south, like Faulkber, Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Connor, as well as short stories and novels written by Latin American writers like Garcia Marquez, Fuentes, Cortazar, Liliana Heker and Christina Perry-Rossi. Beyond the description and interpretation of the works of each writer, this seminar aims at sketching the interrelations between writers of the south of the USA and Latin American Writers. We will try to describe influences, similarities, and dissimilarities related to the fact that Latin America is the periphery's periphery.
