Course description

The study of French culture and its history allows us to appreciate the importance of this culture, and the influence it carries on the general human culture throughout the modern era. One of the political spheres in which this influence is particularly remarkable is Africa. French is the official language in 21 of 54 African countries. The French culture crosses borders and communities; it takes part in the political structure of these countries, their education system, economy and the arts. The French culture is inseparable of French speaking African cultures. In this course we seek to examine the special connections between France and Africa. Looking into political texts, artistic works, popular music, cinema productions, etc., we will be able to better understand the French history of Africa as well as the African history of France.
