Course description

The Metaphysics of Time in Analytic Philosophy is mostly characterized by the distinction between two central accounts of time. The first (Presentism) gives ontological priority to the evolving Present. According to Presentism, at every instant of time, the present instant turns into past and no longer exists, and a future instant, which is yet to exist turns into an existing present. According to the second account (Eternalism), all temporal instants exists in the same way, and sees past, present and future instants as all equally existing. According to this latter approach, the transition from one present instant to the next is nothing but the transition from one perspective to another on a universe that does not change. The seminar will examine various philosophical argument and also arguments informed by physics, especially the Special Theory of Relativity, that try to determine which account of time is correct
