Course description

Various medieval Islamic disciplines paid attention to the language and to issues related to the interpretation of texts. This course presents several language-related topics (the origin of language, literal and metaphoric usages, synonyms etc.) as discussed in various disciplines (Qurʾānic exegesis, philosophy, grammatical and juridical literature), in order to demonstrate the interaction between these disciplines and to provide students with tools for an interdisciplinary research. The lessons are based on reading and discussing texts composed by the following scholars: al-Ṭabarī (d. 923), al-Fārābī (d. 950), Ibn Jinnī (d. 1002), al-Jurjānī (d. 1078), al-Ġazzālī (d. 1111).
