Course description

The problem of consciousness poses one of the greatest challenges to the cognitive sciences: how does a consciousness experience emerge from neural activity, what is the function of consciousness and how does it affect behavior, and what differentiates conscious processes from unconscious ones. The problem is tightly related to philosophical discussions about body and mind, and about science’s ability to explain consciousness using empirical tools. In this class, we will review the latest developments in the science of consciousness and the leading theories, as well as major philosophical arguments in the field.
