Course description

Each of us knows the fact of consciousness. A basic human intuition is that the capacity of ‘being conscious’ is essential to the kind of beings that we are. The puzzles related to consciousness are considered to be some of the main unsolved philosophical and scientific problems of our times. Scientists and philosophers from various disciplines aim to resolve these puzzles: What distinguishes a conscious state from an unconscious one? What distinguishes a conscious creature from an unconscious one? Are there any distinctive features that distinguish conscious persons from other kinds of conscious animals? Can one scientifically explain the qualitative character of conscious mental phenomena? Can one explain the subjectivity of conscious phenomena by means of the scientific conceptual tools? These questions and related ones will be discussed in this seminar.
