This seminar is concerned with two structural regarding linguistic meaning. The first is Meaning Holism - the view according to which the system of semantic relations among the expressions of a given language is necessary for these expressions to mean what they do. The second is sentence priority – the view that the most basic connections between language and world obtain at the level of complete sentences (rather than sentence-parts). In the seminar we will clarify these positions, consider several views of linguistic meaning that incorporate them, and discuss several objections that were raised against them and the answers given to these objections in the literature.
