Metaethics studies the nature of moral thought and discourse, in abstraction from any particular ethical theory (consequentialism, deontology, etc.) or practical dilemmas (abortion, euthanasia, etc.) Are there facts about right and wrong, good and evil, or is it all rather a matter of personal taste? Is there such a thing as moral knowledge, and if so, what makes it special? Do moral judgments express beliefs or rather some conative attitude? What, if any, is the connection between moral judgment and moral motivation? We shall examine several key debates in metaethics that arise when we survey the main positions in the field.
