Course description

Introduction to Israeli Law

The Israeli legla system was and is influenced by several foreign legal systems, among them the Anglo-American system, the Continetal system and different religious systems. In the first part of the course we will briefly study the history and characteristics of these systems. In the second part we will study the ways these systems shaped the Israeli system in its different formative periods starting from the end of the Ottoman period. We shall also study some major characteristics of the Israeli legal system, e.g. the relative role of precedent and legislation, legal research and educatioin and the reations between state law and non-state systems.
