Course description

This course deals with the cities of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire from the third century C.E. to the eighth century. It will focus on the following subjects: the city in the early Roman Empire; the city and the third-century crisis; the reforms of Diocletian and Constantine and their impact on the cities; the foundation of new cities and their status; cities and Christianity; the fate of the cities in the middle Byzantine period
