Course description
Introduction to Jewish Law and Islamic Law –Dr. Levi Cooper, Dr. Lena Salaymeh
The Islamic law component of this course has three general goals: (1) to provide an overview of the development of orthodox Islamic jurisprudence through comparative and historical approaches; (2) to introduce some important issues in Islamic legal history; and (3) to provide an opportunity to practice legal reasoning and writing skills. It is not expected or possible that by the end of this course you will gain expertise in Islamic jurisprudence. Instead, you will acquire a basic understanding of how law changed throughout Islamic history. By the end of the semester, you should be able to provide suitable responses to the following questions: What is Islamic law? What are the sources of Islamic jurisprudence? How did the conceptualization and practice of Islamic law change over time? What are some major phases in Islamic legal history? (Course readings will be provided in Arabic and in English.)
