Course description
This course explores the foundations of American culture as well as contemporary manifestations. This course will look at evolving ideas of class, race, religion, gender and citizenship in the American context. We will consider the tension between cultural unity and cultural diversity in the United States. Attention will be devoted to the origins, development, and consequences of American cultural tropes, for example from the Boston Tea Party to the modern day Tea Party movement. Texts will include samples from American thought and literature, popular culture, and academic analysis. Together we will ask how anthropology can contribute to understanding different social groups, communities, regions, and political institutions.
