Course Description:
The skill of writing a good essay or paper could be learned and is immensely valuable. Having good ideas is only the first step; these ideas ought to be presented in an engaging and persuasive way. This course is designed to enhance basic skills in reading and writing academic texts, and creating familiarity with the university and its values. The course will focus on the structure of academic papers, including types of academic writing, evidences, arguments and persuasion, Students will be required to read academic texts and to identify the structure of the argument, present a summary and to discuss the rationale and evidence supporting it. Since academic writing is dependent on the research of others, the course will emphasize the importance of finding, evaluating and referring to relevant literature. The course will also review issues such as, the structure of the article / seminar paper, the role of introduction and conclusion; the differences between research topic, research question and thesis (argument); limitations of the study, search and sources registration and references, writing style and basic punctuation rules. Students will also be briefly instructed in making presentations and in making public speaking and presentations in academic context.
