Course description
Union with God in Sufism and Hasidism
Sexuality and Mysticism in the writings of Rumi, the Besht and the Maggid of Mezritch
This seminar will open with the study of Hebrew translations of the most important mystical love poems of Jalaluddin Rumi, the Persian-Turkish mystic and one of the great teachers of Sufism (Islamic mysticism). This introduction will enable a comparison between Rumi's mystical world and the spiritual world of the Baal Shem Tov (Besht) the founder of Hasidism and his student the Maggid of Mezritch concerning the meaning of their highest mystical experience. The question of the meaning of the sexual terminology characteristic to these mystical texts, is a fundamental one. During the seminar we'll study relevant texts from early Hasidism concerning intimate devotion toward God which compare this state to sexual arousal and union.
