Course description
The seminar intends to acquaint students with the fundamental rules of the genre of poetry as attested in the Hebrew Bible, paying special attention to language, style and literary structure. We will examine texts that represent the archaic poetry, the classical ear of the First Temple period, and the late era of the Second Temple period. This will be done in the light of comparative material, i.e., parallel texts from other literatures of the ancient Near East. We will also discuss prominent theoretical approaches to key phenomena of biblical poetry, such as the parallelism and word-pairs, psalmodic genres, syntactic peculiarities, etc.
