Course description
How do bilinguals comprehend and produce words in two languages? What are the linguistic and cognitive consequences of using more than one language? The course will cover key issues in bilingualism, and will examine the effects of important factors such as age and manner of acquisition of the second language, proficiency level and patterns of use on processes and mental representations associated with using two languages in one brain. We will discuss how knowledge of one language influences processing of another language, and the role of degree of similarity between the two languages. Students will be introduced to prominent psycholinguistic theories and empirical findings addressing these issues.
