Course description
From the Print Revolution to the Enlightenment: The Cultural History of Jews in Europe in the Early Modern Era
The early modern era might be summarised as an era of revolutions: from the fifteen century print revolution through the scientific revolution to the Enlightenment and the French Revolution of the Eighteen century. In the Jewish society we might add Lurianic Kabbalah, Sabbetianism, Hasidism and Haskalah. These moments will give us an ideal space to the study of ‘transformation’, ‘revolution’ and ‘renewal’ as portrayed through the lens of a traditional yet dynamic society amidst a period of fundamental values change.
