Course description
Men and Women: Halakha and Roman law during the Mishnaic and Ammoraic Periods
The relations between women and men stand in the heart of economic, social and legal processes. The marriage institution reflects changes in the status of women, the concept of ownership and the role of inheritance; different concepts of sexual relations are reflected in the way in which communities define their border lines, influence inter-religious relations and attest to the status of the law and its power. This course will focus on betrothal, marriage, adultery, sexual relations, divorce, dowries and bride price, and the implications of the various legal concepts, by studying sources from Qumran, Hellenistic Judaism, Talmudic literature, Roman law and early Christianity and will address the different methods of their reading.
