Course description
Halakha and Society during the Mishnaic and Ammoraic Periods
How does the Halakha develop? What are the forces activating it? What is the interaction between the halakhic system and its society? In this course we will survey halakhic developments from the Second Temple through the Ammoraic period in their historical, social and religious context; We will investigate the evolution of the legal institution, the halakhic writings and the mechanism the sages use for halakhic changes; we will study the relation between the sages and their surroundings and the mutual influence between halakha and society in late antiquity; and we will examine the importance of these institutions to Jewish history.
