Course description
Culture and Emotions
Dalit Bloch

Emotions play an important role in our daily lives. They have an effect on human interaction in various cultures. Are they biological and universal, or are they culturally-defined and therefore, relative and vary across cultures? In what ways does culture construct emotions, and how can emotional-vocabulary shape inter-cultural communication? Can we, given the current global condition and flow of information across countries, borrow emotional-terms from one culture to another? In our effort to tackle these and other questions, we explore the complex relations between emotions and the cultural-temporal context within which they “work”. We depart from theoretical discussion and proceed to examine socio-cultural study-cases of emotions such as love, shame, anger and more, the cultural construction of Self, embodied perceptions and feelings, and how they are expressed and managed in various socio-cultural arenas.
