Course description

Alongside rhetorical theories in “native” fields like philosophy, literature and linguistics, there has been a growing body of literature on rhetoric as cultural and social practice since the mid 20th century. This literature is generally affiliated with disciplines such as sociology, criminology, legal studies and mass communication, and its conceptual frameworks correspond to the particular empirical objectives and methodological constraints of each discipline. The purpose of this course is to complete the students’ knowledge of rhetorical theories by introducing different perspectives on rhetoric as developed in “foreign” disciplines: in sociology (“claims-making activity” in social problems studies), in collective action studies (“social movement rhetoric”), in political science (“political persuasion” and “candidate image”), in film studies (“rhetoric in films”), in social-psychology (“opinion making”), in marketing (“adds as arguments”) and social marketing (“fear appeals”), in laws (“legal argumentation”), and so forth. The course discusses the dialectical relations between rhetoric and “other” disciplines, and explores the unique contribution of rhetoric to each discipline, as well as contribution of other disciplines to our understanding and assessment of rhetoric in theory and practice.
