Course description

Al-Farabi on Prophecy and Philosophy

The seminar will deal with the philosophy of Al-Farabi (died in 950), generally regarded as the greatest philosopher in Islam, both in terms of his originality, and in terms of his critical approach. During the meetings we will read texts from his various writings and will focus on the Interesting relation he established between philosophy and religion, and between philosopher and prophet. In doing so, we will try to examine the various implications of such relationships on state’s nature, ethics, law and theology.
