Course description
Qadis and Courts in the Muslim World. From the Middle Ages to the Ottoman Period
This course deals with the legal system in different areas of the Muslim world from the Middle Ages to the Ottoman period. Different types of texts will be analysed, such as historical chronicles, biographical entries on judges, Adab al-qadi works, fatwas, court documents a.o. 
Mandatory class attendance and active participation contribute to 40% of the final grade. In addition to various assignments (20%), students are required to write a final seminar paper (ca. 25 pages) or a "referat" (ca. 15 pages): 40%.
