Course description

Experimental Phonology
Evan-Gary Cohen
The course deals with experimental aspects of phonetics, phonology and morphophonology. Practical and theoretical considerations in conducting experiments are discussed. We investigate the contribution of experiments to the understanding of phonetics and phonological systems. Students completing the course in its entirety will have the foundations needed for conducting experiments.
We begin with an introduction to the field. We follow with a discussion of methodology. The subsequent sections discuss various kinds of experiment, and the kinds of phenomena dealt with. Time permitting, we will discuss the use and validity of experiments during acquisition.

Prerequisites: Phonetics and Advanced Phonology (can be taken simultaneously). Acoustic Phonetics is advisable.

Course requirements: Attendance of lectures, reading assigned material, assignments, final paper.
