Course description
During the twentieth century, the history of the Hashemite family was closely intertwined with the political history of the Middle East at large. The Hashemites, who trace their descent to the prophet Muhammad, led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire hundred years ago, were the main allies of the British in the interwar period and established with their assistance four states, of which only the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has survived until this day. The course will analyze central themes in Middle Eastern history by exploring the Arab Revolt and its legacy and by closely following the Hashemites. It will also try to assess the extent of their impact on the makeup of the region as we know it today.
