Course description
In this course we deal with several key issues in the philosophy of language. At the heart of the course stands the question of linguistic meaning: What it is, and what makes it the case that our utterances have the meaning they do. In the discussion section we will consider several further key topics in the field, such as speech acts, implicature, the nature of reference and necessity. Among the philosophers we will read are Austin, Brandon, Dummett, Davidson, Grice, Fodor, Frege, Kaplan, Putnam, Quine, Russell and Searle.
