Course description
Children and childhood experience in the classical world

The seminar will investigate the world of children (paides) and the experience of childhood (paideia) in classical Greece (fifth and fourth centuries BCE) from birth to puberty. The course will discuss contemporary perceptions regarding offspring and decisions about childrearing, the image of the child, children's legal status, and the various ways a child is groomed for citizenship. In addition, we shall examine patterns of relationships formed among children and adults in family and society, and the place of children in religious and civic activity. The focus of discussion will be referenced to interrelations of the political, cultural, social and gendered contemporary reality and the construction and formulation of the stage of childhood by adults.
Discussions will be accompanied by critical reading of primary sources (in translation) and contemporary research literature.
