Course description

The subject of this seminar is Architecture as a dialogue with Place. By Place is meant on the one hand physical aspects such as topography, geology and climate and on the other hand the accumulated layers of cultures which act on, or create a dialectic with, the Genius Loci.

This constant dialogue between Architecture and Place is expressed as a hierarchy of approaches: interweaving, assimilation, challenge, authority, control etc. Both the analysis and interpretation of Place as a moral statement will be carried out by relating architectural creativity to Place in both its physical and its cultural manifestations under the following headings:

Physical: location, plan, structure, enclosure, spaces, details, materials, drawing and sculpture, etc.

Cultural: sources of inspiration, references, aesthetic, ideological or other principles, both evident and concealed.

The case study will be Architecture in Israel of various periods.
