Course description

Architecture and film are intimately related as they underscore and depend on bodily movements through dynamic space. Like architecture, Cinema is connected to physicality, to movement and touching; both actions require a sense of direction, attention and intention. In this course we will look to cinema to illustrate an idea about the experience of the built architectural space, to identify the ways it experienced as it is portrayed on the cinematic screen. The course integrates architectural research and cinematic analysis. It examines how the arts of architecture and cinema contribute to each other, intertwine and building a conceptual world together. We will integrate close analysis of cinematic representation of the built, architectural and urban, environment, the protagonists' actions and the course of the narrative in examining the relations between architecture and film. The course examines the cinematic medium from a spatial-architectural perspective, thus offers an original way of looking at the concrete-built environment and at the films that describe it.
