Course description

This course surveys the development of the architectural culture of antiquity in various parts of the world over a broad time span, from the Neolithic period up to the Roman period c. 300 C.E. It accounts for both the rise of Western civilization and non-Western cultures, and the reciprocal relations and transfer of knowledge from one region and period to another. During this semester you will become acquainted with architectural concepts such as typology, style, ornament and tectonics, and building methods and types. The course will explore how architecture and urbanism are linked to climate, geology and geography (the natural world), and governmental, religious and philosophical systems (the socio-cultural world).
