Course description

Art Institutions became a central component of contemporary life style, globally and in Israel. A wide variety of cultural institution operate in today's market, and their number – and offerings – grow every year: Libraries, museums, theaters, art-film houses, and other cultural centers host a myriad of activities and programs, from permanent to temporary such as festivals or weekly\monthly events.

The course will introduce the main types of cultural institutions, and in short their history, mainly its modern "leg". We will examine the meaning of leisure, tourism, globalization, and edutainment and their influence on the strategies institutes incorporate in planning and executing their contents, with audiences in mind. Our focus will be on the structure, history, policies and players in the Israeli cultural field: Government-municipal, private, NGOs (funds, collectors, etc). What are the main dilemmas in managing culture in Israel? How do plan content for a wide (or specific) audience: Religious, new immigrants, Arabs, tourist? How does a cultural institute deal with political pressure? Finally, we will explore issues pertaining to traditions, heritage and narratives in planning content.

Though cultural management involves, of course, dealing with budgets, logistics, day-to-day management tasks, marketing, advertising and branding, we will concentrate on managing content. How does a cultural institute plan, shows and manages the cultural segment (film, performing arts, art, heritage…) it specializes in?

During the course we will explore 5 major art fields, and guest lecturers will present their respective specialties.
