Course description

The Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes Company is considered one of the most significant cultural and artistic phenomena of the twentieth century. Not only did the company totally changed and reformed ballet and dance, but it had a profound influence on the arts and the visual culture in general - such as design, textile and fashion. A central feature of the Ballets Russes was its multicultural and intercultural approach, which produced dynamic relationships between various cultural traditions. The company was active for twenty years (1909-1929), during of which Diaghilev initiated extraordinary encounters between leading artists from different creative fields, and their collaborations have yielded exceptionally avant-garde works. Moreover, while reforming the dance, the innovative combinations between different cultural traditions and between visual design, music and choreography have also redefined modernism itself. These are the focal points of the seminar, designed to explore the radical modernism of the Ballet Russes in the contexts of art, society and intercultural negotiations.
