The course will introduce and offer practice in the fundamentals of videographic criticism, an exciting new field within cinema and media studies. Videographic scholarship offers complementary and alternative avenues to traditional, textual approaches, enabling the discovery of new insights into media objects, by analyzing and examining them “on the editing table.” By “writing with video,” film and media scholars can communicate observations, interpretations and theoretical ideas directly and accessibly, using audio-visual language and the very subjects of their research. The course will combine intensive hands-on practice, requiring students to create their own videographic works, with theoretical studies and written assignments, aiming to creatively integrate videographic creation with theoretical thought and analytical writing, experimenting with various aspects of the emerging videographic form.
