Course description

“The Sitcom is Dead” - many a time has this ‘verdict’ been reached in the US since the cancellation of Seinfeld (1989-1998) and across the pond too, ever since British sitcoms The Royals (1998-2000) and The Office aired their respective series finales. This seminar sets out to explore the history of comedic broadcast content and its place in contemporary television, on the web, and on emerging streaming platforms, spanning various genres from sitcoms, skit shows, satires, web series, and so on. These subjects, as reviewed in scholarly literature will be discussed in an American, English, and Israeli context. Class topics of discussion will extend to content, aesthetics, various production aspects and audience reception so as to provide as broad an analytical context as possible.
