In his book on contemporary Israeli cinema, Moshe Zimmerman writes that Israeli television has developed considerably in recent years and suggests that drama is the most interesting genre on television screens today. Despite such statements and the feeling that Israeli television, and particularly Israeli dramas, has become an important aspect of Israeli culture, surprisingly little academic research and writing has been devoted to this topic. In an attempt to fill in this gap, this course will suggest various theoretical approaches to studying Israeli television dramas. We will discuss Channel One's "high-brow dramas", Channel Two's popular dramas, and the current wealth of dramas available on satellite and cable channels.
