Course description
The course will present the principal ideas of narratology, and several important theoretical approaches to the analysis of narrative, as applicable to cinematic and televisual narratives, while touching on the similarities and differences between these two types of visual narratives, as well as the similarities and differences between visual narratives and other types of narrative (with an emphasis on literary narratives). The first part of the course will present the main basic concepts of narratology and of film and television narratives. The second part will examine in depth several important narrative elements as they apply to film and television. The third part will introduce several theoretical approaches to the analysis of visual narratives – structuralist and post-structuralist, cognitive and gender-based. The fourth part will discuss several models and types of narratives: classical/Hollywood narrative, modernist narrative, complex narrative, transmedia narrative and others.
