Course description

The class will discuss Brazilian cinema from the 50s till today. From the days of the chanchada, through Cinema Novo and till the Retomada. Through the analysis of salient Brazilian films questions will be raised about issues regarding the history and culture of Brazil and their connection with national cinema, popular cinema, third world cinema, post-colonialism, Aesthetics of Hunger, Tropicalia, cultural canibalism, the representation of poverty and violence and the position of Brazilian cinema in the map of world cinema and more specifically Latin American cinema.
