The course will examine how films are "listened" by highlighting different aspects of the cinematic soundtrack: What are the relationships between the visual image and the soundtrack? What are the cinematic soundtrack components? Can they be differentiated? How does sound produce cinematic time and space? Why does sound is always already temporal and how could auditory stasis exist? How sound and music can be read semiotically? How sound produces identity, subjectivity and gender? What does it mean to listen through technology reproduction? and other questions. The course will be accompanied by reading theories of sound and cinema and viewing different films.
