Course description
The history of contemporary film theory, as well as the theory of film history, owes its stature to its two founding fathers: the French thinker Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) and the American philosopher Stanley Cavell (1926-). These thinkers, in different (yet complementary) ways, are responsible for the evolution of contemporary film theory, and, no less importantly, for western thought adopting the hyphenated hybrid concept of film-philosophy as the new approach to thought, action, praxis, and human existence. This course aims to unveil the methodical importance of these thinkers, by engaging with their predominant texts, presenting and discussing their terminologies and conceptual frameworks, introducing their guiding principles and presuppositions, and deliberating their multi-dimensional impact in ethics, politics, thought and action.
