This course examines representations of the family as a central theme and generic key concept of television as a medium and an art. Such representations on both the Israeli and American screens are examined in their communication arts environments and socio-cultural contexts and provide valuable insights into the cultural agenda and ideological negotiations on each. In addition to the discussion of theoretical aspects of television’s place in the domestic sphere and the family’s place in television’s discourse, the interpretive -comparative analysis of American and Israeli sitcoms, dramas and reality television offers a socio- historical and aesthetic view of transitions and social processes in both television cultures. In addition, the seminar focuses on applying theoretical and interpretive discussions of representations of the family on the American screen to the Israeli context, hence studying theoretical models and the applicability thereof to diverse and novel cultural contexts.
