Course description

This seminar combines theoretical and practical research to examine the relation between social, geographic and musical mobility. The course will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Moshe Morad, of 88 FM, who will contribute from his experience in radio and the popular music industry. In the course we will discuss how music represents mobility within and between nations, cosmopolitanism, and the transgression of political and social boundaries. We will ask how music moves across  geographic regions and how such moves influence genre categories instrumentation and musical meaning. We will also consider the impact of technology on musical mobility, including recording, radio, cellular and the internet. As part of the course, we will observe and participate in musical events among different immigrant communities and use key tools in ethnomusicological research, including field recordings, photography writing ethnographic field notebook, transcription and analysis. The course will culminate in the preparation of a podcast - a 20 minute audio program that will represent the result of research conducted by the students during the semester
