A detailed survey, along the axis of time within the turn of the century, of the Harmonic/melodic contents which took place via the interaction between Classical and Romantic era of the late 19th century. The course will emphasize, via an analysis of prominent compositions, how the harmony of late 19th century classical music tempered by the imperatives of improvisation, the inflections of the blues, the rhythmic parameters of swing and the forward drive of bebop evolved to become a substantially different idiom: jazz harmony.
