A detailed survey, along the axis of time within the turn of the century, of the Harmonic/melodic contents which took place via the interaction between Classical and Romantic era of the late 19^th century. The course will emphasize, via an analysis of prominent compositions, how the harmony of late 19^th century classical music tempered by the imperatives of improvisation, the inflections of the blues, the rhythmic parameters of swing and the forward drive of bebop evolved to become a substantially different idiom: jazz harmony.
